It's been widely accepted for the last few years that calcium intake aids in weight loss, but no one was quite sure how. Now, researchers writing in the International Journal of Obesity think they know why: they conducted a study where people took in either low, medium or high concentrations of calcium in their daily diet. The high-calcium group (>1800mg/day) had 2.5 times the rate of fecal fat excretion than the low-calcium group (500mg/day). Researchers believe that calcium binds with fat in the GI tract, aiding in its excretion. Interestingly, there were no effects on blood cholesterol or triglyceride levels.
This looks like a nicely-controlled study, and I can almost forgive one researcher for his quote: "This is a very solid finding and seen across all of the subjects".
